Beginner's Guide to CBD
Our beginner's guide to CBD covers the most important topics and aims to give you the information you need to get started. Buying CBD for the first time can be confusing and as there is often some confusion around CBD and Marijuana, this is a good place to start. Let's explain...
What is CBD?
The Hemp and Marijuana plants are both subspecies of the Cannabis plant family. Both these plant subspecies contain multiple compounds called cannabinoids.
The 2 main cannabinoids we will focus on are here are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Whilst both CBD and THC offer health benefits, THC, found in large quantities in Marijuana, is psychoactive (gets you “stoned”) and illegal in the UK. Hemp on the other hand is the opposite. It is high in CBD and naturally very low in THC.
|High in CBD / Low in THC||High in THC / Low in CBD|
|Legal||Illegal (in the UK)|
All Flora Farmacy products are made from CBD extracted from organically grown, low-THC strains of hemp. The CBD is then lab tested to ensure there is no presence of THC or other contaminants, making it legal and safe to use. This also ensures our CBD products will never get you “high”.

How Does CBD Work?
All mammals, birds, reptiles and fish have what is known as an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS contains a network of cannabinoid receptors that are spread throughout almost every tissue of the human body.
These receptors known as CB1 and... yep you guessed it, CB2, promote homeostasis (a state of healthy balance) by bonding to cannabinoids that are naturally produced within the body called AEA and 2-AG. This process regulates a host of biological functions as shown below.
When the levels of AEA and 2-AG are balanced, the ECS can run efficiently however some threats to our internal balance are hard to avoid. Stress from work, family, and all of life's daily demands can weigh heavily on our equilibrium. For example, increased stress overstimulates CB1 receptors in the brain, causing it to compensate by lowering the CB1 receptors there.
When the ECS is not balanced correctly, it can lead to a disorder known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED). The good news is these receptors are also able to bond to exogenous cannabinoids (like CBD). Further research is still being conducted however the evidence from medical studies thus far clearly indicates that supplementing with exogenous cannabinoids like CBD can greatly benefit in restoring this balance.
Once balance has been restored, the ECS then can dispatch 2 enzymes called FAAH and MAGL. These enzymes are released to break down the surplus cannabinoids preventing them from overcorrecting.
Which CBD Products are Right for Me?
At Flora Farmacy we stock a wide variety of organic CBD products that cover the most popular and effective methods of CBD supplementation.
CBD Oils can also be administered sublingually (under the tongue), offering a slightly higher bio-availability rate of up to 20%.
When CBD is vaporised, it offers the highest bio-availability rate of up to 35%! Our CBD Vape E-Liquids are specifically designed for vaporisation and it’s worth noting regular CBD Oil should never be vaporised.
Our CBD Balms work a little differently than the previously mentioned methods. When CBD is applied externally, it is not readily absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead it interacts directly with the local cannabinoid receptors in the muscles and skin making it a great choice for treating a wide variety of skin conditions, cut and scrapes, localised pain and discomfort or just for regular cosmetic and beauty application.
How Much CBD Should I Take?
The effectiveness of CBD on the specific ailment or disorder you are addressing is affected by many variables including your age, height, weight, metabolism, tolerance and even genetics.
Fortunately, the process of finding the minimum effective dose of CBD for any condition is quite straightforward using a technique called the "Stepwise Dosing Procedure."
The Stepwise Dosing Procedure is a process by which you first establish a minimum baseline dosage, then adjust the dosage incrementally over a set period of time. This is continued until the effective dosage is established.
Start Low and Go Slow - The first step to finding your minimum effective dose is to establish a baseline dosage.
- As a rule of thumb, start with a small baseline dosage of around 10mg, two or three times daily.
- Maintain your baseline dosage for 7 days, taking note of how the CBD interacts with your body.
- If you are not receiving the benefits you were expecting after the initial 7 days of taking your baseline CBD dosage, then increase the dosage by 1-2 mg every 3 days until you find the dosage that is most suited to you.
- Once you have determined your minimum effective dose, you may wish to decrease your dosage by one step to see if you can maintain the benefits at a slightly lower dosage.
If you feel you need a higher dosage, we have created the following chart to assist you in establishing your baseline dosage depending on your weight.
|1 - Mild||2mg-4mg +||4mg - 6mg +||6mg - 8mg +||8mg - 10mg +|
|2||4mg-8mg +||6mg - 12mg +||8mg - 18mg +||12mg - 20mg +|
|3 - Medium||8mg-12mg +||12mg - 18mg +||18mg - 24mg +||22mg - 30mg +|
|4||12mg-18mg +||18mg - 24mg +||24mg - 32mg +||32mg - 40mg +|
|5 - Severe||18mg-30mg +||24mg - 40mg +||32mg - 60mg +||42mg - 60mg +|
Please note this chart is submitted as a suggestive guide only and is not meant to take the place of a qualified physician.
How Long Does a Dose of CBD Last?
How quickly CBD effects start to take place is often based on your preferred method of ingestion. The below table provides an indication as to how quickly the various methods can start to work as well as how long a single dose can last.
|Oral (Swallowed)||30 mins - 2 hours||6 - 8 hours|
|Sublingual (Under Tongue)||15 mins – 1 hour||4 – 6 hours|
|Vaporisation (Inhaled)||Immediate||2 – 4 hours|
|Topical (Rubbed on Skin)||15 minutes||2 – 4 hours|
So, to summarise the above. Flora Farmacy CBD...
